Artist’s Statement
In my work, I often draw inspiration from the natural world’s tranquil, yet powerful qualities. I am interested in exploring those aspects of nature that can be found under the surface, in addition to that which can be seen. I find relief or block printing, with its technique of layering blocks of color, to be the ideal medium for characterizing these multiple surfaces or layers found in nature.
Because the natural world is in a constant state of transformation, I aim to bring a sense of movement to the image as well. As I carve into a block, I am mindful of the pattern of cuts I make even if they are not always visible in the final print. These marks help to reinforce the sense of movement I want to achieve.
Bio
In 2003, Neil Brigham earned a Masters of Art in illustration from Syracuse University. Since then, he has divided his art-making time between printmaking and freelance illustration projects. His primary medium is linocut printing, but will often combine this with paint, collage and pen and ink. Brigham’s background in illustration has reinforced his use of storytelling and movement within a composition. In addition to showing locally, his work was selected to be a part of the Society of Illustrators 48th annual exhibition in New York City, as well as their traveling show in 2006. A sample of his illustration work can be found on the Ispot website (www.neilbrigham.com).
